Pelican Products Selects Stem, Inc. for Energy Storage Services

AI-driven system contributes to grid relief during wildfires and heat waves

Torrance, CA -

Pelican Products and Stem, Inc., the global leader in artificial intelligence (AI)-powered energy storage services, announces Pelican Products’ first AI-driven storage system is now contributing to heat wave relief in Southern California.

Pelican Products is the global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance protective cases, temperature controlled packaging solutions, advanced portable lighting systems, and rugged gear for professionals and outdoor enthusiasts. Since commencing operation in June 2018, Stem’s 500 kilowatt (KW) AI-powered energy storage system has greatly reduced onsite electricity use at Pelican’s headquarters in Torrance, California.

Pelican’s system joins the world’s largest network of energy storage systems, owned by Stem, which enables its customers to participate in a marketplace of additional utility-facing services. For example, Pelican’s system is called upon when not needed at its Torrance manufacturing plant, providing Southern California Edison additional power needed in the highly-congested West Los Angeles basin.

When heatwaves and wildfires strain the local distribution grid, Stem’s systems are dispatched repeatedly, helping to contribute to the community’s electricity reliability. Pelican’s new energy storage system has already added to the network’s heat wave relief over a dozen times this summer. The company is reviewing plans for a second system at the same site. “We appreciate that performance reliability Stem has to offer,” said Gabe Guerra, Director of Manufacturing Operations for Pelican Products. “We see Stem’s automated services as a smart technique to help us better control our energy use, while supporting sustainability and electricity reliability efforts.”

“Stem’s artificial intelligence platform, Athena™, offers industrial manufacturers automated savings to boost their business operations,” said John Carrington, CEO of Stem, Inc. “We are proud to give equipment manufacturers like Pelican Products, who are serving our first responders, additional means to contribute to the community and increase the reliability of the electric grid with our energy storage innovations.”

Stem has the largest project finance pool among its peers, now over US$650 million, enabling Stem’s 860 energy storage systems under management across five states and three countries (U.S., Japan, and Canada). Athena™, Stem’s cutting-edge AI, is the first of its kind for customer-sited energy storage, performing real-time energy optimization that reduces onsite peak demand and enabling customers to participate via Stem’s networks to access additional services and value streams.
